The Cleaning Power of Ozone

What is Ozone?

Ozone: noun /’ō,zōn/: a colorless gas with a pungent odor and powerful oxidizing properties. Ozone (O3) or "Active Oxygen" is formed naturally from Oxygen (O2) and an electric discharge or exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

How does it clean?

O2  -> O3, The third molecule gained is unstable and can attach itself to, and kill, the fungus and bacteria that cause skin/nail infection and the horrific smells our shoes and gear can produce. When odors, bacteria or viruses make contact with ozone, their chemical structure is changed to less odorous compounds. As more ozone attacks the remaining compounds, the odor is eventually destroyed. This process is called oxidation. Ozone essentially reverts back to oxygen after it is used. This makes it a very environmentally friendly oxidant.

Ozone is one of the most powerful sterilizers in the world and can be used to destroy bacteria, viruses and odors. Ozone is most known for the Ozone Layer that protects the Earth by preventing damaging ultraviolet light from reaching the Earth's surface. This same oxidizing property causes ozone to damage mucous and respiratory tissues when exposed to large amounts or for a long period of time. For safety and comfort, please use the OzoDry cover bag to reduce exposure to ozone and place the unit in a well ventilated area, especially when using the ozone sterilization.

Ozone is a powerful oxidant that has been used for years to clean, sterilize, and deodorize many industrial and consumer applications.

Ozone is used to:

  • Disinfect water in place of chlorine
  • Disinfect kitchen tools and treat industrial waste
  • Deodorize air and objects
  • Kill bacteria on food or on contact surfaces
  • Clean fresh fruits and vegetables to kill yeast, mold and bacteria
  • Sanitize swimming pools and spas
